WASHINGTON — Metro’s fare increases and service cuts will start June 25, the transit agency announced Friday.
In March, the Metro Board of Directors approved a 25-cent fare increase for most bus trips and off-peak rail trips and a 10-cent increase for rush hour rail trips, to go along with already-approved cuts to rail service hours.
The vote also included reducing scheduled rush-hour rail service to every eight minutes at end-of-line stations from the every six minutes trains are scheduled today.
Yellow Line Rush Plus service will be canceled, and a number of bus routes also will be cut.
Metro’s new budget officially starts July 1, a week after Metro plans to implement the changes.
The new hours for the rail system will be 5 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday, 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday.
The last trains will continue leave stations at the ends of the lines up to 50 minutes before the official closing time, and arrive at end-of-line stations well after the stated closing time. Initial trains in the morning also do not serve all stations immediately when the system opens.
Metro is adding some limited new late-night bus service. The transit agency made some of the changes in December, including service along parts of the Red, Green, Orange and Yellow lines.
The weekly unlimited bus pass will remain $17.50, providing a discount for regular riders.
