New Food Bank for the Hungry Set to Open in Central Virginia

MADISON HEIGHTS, Va. (AP) — A new food bank is set to open in central Virginia later this month.

The Amherst New Era-Progress reports (http://bit.ly/2p9tYmp ) a warehouse run by the nonprofit Neighbors helping Neighbors has shelves stocked and food inventoried. The goal is to officially open May 20.

The warehouse will carry perishable and nonperishable items, and residents will have the opportunity to choose food items once a month. The number of items a person can take will be based on how many people are in the household.

The nonprofit already runs food kitchens in Amherst and Madison Heights.

Earlier this week, Neighbors Helping Neighbors received a grant of nearly $13,500 that will be used to purchase a walk-in cooler.
