Metro GM Wiedefeld to Speak on Track Work Program, Derailment

WASHINGTON — Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld will provide an update on the agency’s 24/7 track-work program on Wednesday, as well as details on what Metro has done since the derailment near East Falls Church last month.

The update will come after a meeting involving Metro Board Chairman Jack Evans, Wiedefeld and senior Metro staff — a previously scheduled meeting now overshadowed by serious safety problems identified by the Federal Transit Administration and underlined by a derailment last month.

Evans, a member of the D.C. Council, had planned the meeting to meet a number of new hires at the top of Metro management. While that is still expected to happen, the meeting is now also expected to cover a scathing FTA report released Monday about a lack of inspections, training and staffing and basic errors in maintenance.

The study found problems including stretches of track where trains switch from one track to the other that were not inspected anywhere close to the number of times they should have been, and safety problems that were long ignored.

The report followed a derailment of a Silver Line train going through one of those interlockings near East Falls Church.
