FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) — An invasive snakehead fish has been caught in Lake Anna for what may be the first time.
The Free Lance-Star (http://bit.ly/2rVI4wk ) reported Wednesday that 29-year-old Colby Horne caught the fish over the weekend, snapped a picture with it, and released it.
John Odenkirk, a biologist with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, says a woman took a picture of a snakehead in Lake Anna last summer, but nobody had reported catching one there until now.
He says as far as the department knows, Horne’s is the first verified catch in the manmade lake in Spotsylvania, Louisa and Orange counties.
Snakeheads are abundant in the Potomac and its tributaries and can also be found in the Rappahannock. They can breathe air, survive on land and thrive in foreign environments.
