IKEA to Open Norfolk Store in 2018

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Swedish home furnishings store IKEA has announced plans to build its second Virginia store in Hampton Roads.

The company says in a news release that construction on the store will begin in spring 2017 with an anticipated opening a year later.

The Hampton Roads store will be located just west of Interstate 64 and north of Northampton Boulevard. IKEA officials say the store will be 331,000 square feet and have 1,000 parking spaces.

The Hampton Roads IKEA is expected to support about 500 construction jobs, with 250 jobs in the store once it opens.

Currently, IKEA’s only Virginia store is in Woodbridge, which is about a three-hour drive from Norfolk. The company has hundreds of stores worldwide, but just 42 in the United States.
