VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — The number of Hurricane Matthew victims in Virginia is nearing the 5,000 mark.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency says more than 4,800 people have registered for aid since wind and flooding struck two months ago.
FEMA has approved nearly $8 million in aid so far, while the National Flood Insurance Program has paid policy holders $30 million. People are also taking out federal loans to rebuild.
FEMA says more than 97 percent of home inspections have been completed.
The agency is closing its offices this week in Portsmouth and Suffolk. But its center in Virginia Beach remains open.
