Heavy Rain Causes Apartment Wall Collapse; 11 Displaced

WASHINGTON — A wall in an apartment building buckled under heavy rains, leaving 11 people without a home.

D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman said a 50-foot section of a wall in the basement of a three-story apartment building on the 3800 block of V Street Southeast collapsed, undermined by heavy rains that battered the area Friday night into Saturday morning.

The fire department evacuated the occupants. No one was injured. The city and the Red Cross are helping the displaced residents.

The building inspector concluded that the building is not safe for re-occupancy.

Below is the area where the collapse occurred:

function initMapArticle() { var lnglat = {lat: 38.864268, lng: -76.951774}; var map = new google.maps.Map(document.getElementById('map_article'), { zoom: 13, center: lnglat }); var trafficLayer = new google.maps.TrafficLayer(); trafficLayer.setMap(map); var marker = new google.maps.Marker({ position: lnglat, map: map, title: 'V Street Southeast collapse' }); }
