Harford Sheriff's Office to Screen Immigration Status

BEL AIR, Md. (AP) — The Harford County Sheriff’s Office will begin to check the immigration status of people it takes into custody.

The Baltimore Sun (http://bsun.md/2f9iLx7 ) reports that the sheriff’s office is joining a program operated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to help enforce federal immigration law.

ICE will train and supervise deputies at the county’s detention center in Bel Air to screen for immigrants living in the country illegally who may have committed serious crimes.

Anyone who is identified as an immigrant living in the country without legal permission, and who has committed a crime that threatens public safety, will be turned over to federal immigration authorities.

Harford County is the second law enforcement agency in Maryland to sign on to the program.
