Group to Announce Action for Silver Spring Explosion Victims

WASHINGTON — An advocacy group will make what it calls a major announcement Wednesday morning from near the site of last month’s deadly apartment explosion and fire in Silver Spring.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), which advocates for children, says it will “announce action” at 10 a.m. on behalf of the victims of the explosion at the Flower Branch Apartments, on Piney Branch Road, Aug. 10.

Seven people died as a result of the blast, including two children. More than 30 people were treated at hospitals and more than 80 families were displaced.

Authorities say the fire was the result of a gas explosion in a meter room in the basement of one of the buildings.

CASA says that some of the victims of the fire will tell their stories.
