CHESAPEAKE, Va. (AP) — A Chesapeake couple is struggling to understand what, police say, led their grandson to fatally shoot his brother and father and wound his mother.
Karen Toothman tells The Virginian-Pilot (http://bit.ly/2bfFVDP ) that 20-year-old Zachary Toothman had his college gear packed on Saturday and seemed ready to head back to Virginia Tech this month to begin his junior year of college.
The next day, Zachary Toothman was in custody, booked on two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. Authorities say he had shot his parents and his 17-year-old brother inside the family’s Chesapeake home, with only his mother surviving her injuries.
The newspaper reports Zachary Toothman had recently failed out of Virginia Tech’s Naval ROTC program and was no longer enrolled at the university. It’s unclear whether he has an attorney.
