WASHINGTON — A 17-year-old girl driving her nephew home is hospitalized in critical condition after someone fired a shot in the Brentwood neighborhood Thursday.

Metropolitan Police Chief Peter Newsham called the shooting “senseless” in a tweet.

The shooting occurred about 3:30 p.m. in the 1400 block of Saratoga Avenue NE near Montana Terrace.

In addition to the teen, who was shot in the head, police said a man was wounded by another gun shot.

Police said the girl was not the intended target, NBC Washington reported.

Prior to the double shooting, police were called to the neighborhood for a report of someone with a gun, but that suspect’s description did not match with the one for the 3:30 p.m. shooting.

Capt. David Sledge tells NBC Washington a tan or gold Honda Accord with New Jersey tags was seen at the shooting scene.

Police continue to investigate and plan to be in the neighborhood this weekend.
