Gay Pride Assembly at Virginia Beach School Postponed

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — A gay-pride assembly scheduled to occur at Cox High School in Virginia Beach has been postponed.

Media outlets report that the assembly, planned by the school’s Gay-Straight Alliance, was scheduled to take place Dec. 5.

The event was to be optional for students. It would have included a question-and-answer panel with students and a speech from Michael Berlucchi, the president of Hampton Roads Pride.

The Virginian-Pilot reports (http://bit.ly/2gGAboC) that incoming School Board member Victoria Manning sent an email Saturday to board Chairman Dan Edwards saying, in part, that she doesn’t believe such an event should be held during instructional time.

School spokeswoman Eileen Cox said in a statement that a new event will be held that will be “more inclusive of all groups and students.”
