From Vacuums to Gold, $2.5 Billion in Property Is Unclaimed

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The Treasurer of Virginia says one in four residents in the state has unclaimed property.

WSLS-TV in Roanoke reports (http://bit.ly/2ejPEac) that more than $2.5 billion worth of cash and valuables are in the Treasury’s care.

They include a solid gold bar worth about $20,000 and a three-carat diamond ring. There are also tools, cookware, vacuum cleaners and guitars.

It all comes from various places. For instance, banks turn dormant security boxes over to the state. There are also life insurance policies that beneficiaries are unaware of.

Some individuals over the years have reclaimed lost property that was worth more than $1 million.

People can check the state’s website for any unclaimed property that may belong to them.
