WASHINGTON — FreshDirect is bringing its farm-to-fridge grocery delivery service to the D.C. market.
FreshDirect, which sources its products directly from a network of farms, fisheries and suppliers, will start delivery in the region on April 5. It will initially serve the District, Arlington, McLean and Bethesda.
Customers pay a $7.99 delivery fee for a $40 minimum order, or they can pay an annual fee of $129 for unlimited, free delivery through the service’s DeliveryPass program.
The company recently opened a facility in Prince George’s County and said it will eventually bring on more than 50 local employees as part of its D.C. expansion.
FreshDirect’s products include source-identified organic chicken, more than 30 grass-fed beef items and specialty items like Roberta’s pizza from Brooklyn or wild-caught albacore tuna from its own private brand, JUST FreshDirect.
It also delivers meal kits and brand-name consumer goods.
Last year, it launched an office catering service that includes breakfasts and lunch platters.
“FreshDirect is a highly passionate food company that has spent the past 15 years sourcing, procuring and making the freshest food and developing extensive relationships with our farmers, fishermen and suppliers,” said CEO and co-founder Jason Ackerman.
FreshDirect offers next-day delivery, and customers choose a two-hour delivery window.
FreshDirect, headquartered in Long Island City, New York, started its delivery business in New York City in 2002 and has expanded to other markets including Philadelphia, New Jersey and Connecticut.
