RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Three former Virginia attorneys general have filed a brief opposing Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s blanket restoration of voting and other rights for ex-felons.
The brief recently filed with the Virginia Supreme Court said McAuliffe’s April restoration of rights for more than 200,000 ex-felons “undermines the rule of law.”
The brief was filed by Ken Cuccinelli, who ran against McAuliffe in 2013; Jim Gilmore, who also served as governor and sought the Republican presidential nomination this year; and Andrew Miller, a conservative Democrat.
A bipartisan group of state prosecutors has also filed a brief opposing the governor’s order.
The high court is expected in July to hear arguments in the lawsuit, which was filed by Republican lawmakers. McAuliffe has said he’s confident his executive order will withstand legal challenges.
