Ex-vets Group Official Gets 60 Days in Jail for Embezzlement

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) — The former treasurer of a Roanoke veterans’ group has been ordered to serve 60 days in jail and pay more than $24,000 after siphoning thousands of dollars from the club.

The Roanoke Times reports (http://bit.ly/28VffXI ) that James Keith Clem was sentenced Thursday in Salem Circuit Court. Clem is the former treasurer of the Roanoke Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans.

Clem pleaded no contest to two counts of embezzlement in February. He has said that he used an organizational credit card issued in his name to inappropriately spend about $21,000.

Club officials say they believe the amount stolen is actually much higher.

Perry Taylor, second-in-command of the Roanoke chapter, said Clem “betrayed the goodwill of all the veterans.”

Clem said Thursday that he’s truly sorry for his actions.
