Elderly Spotsylvania Man Shoots, Kills Neighbor in Property Dispute

WASHINGTON — An 80-year-old Spotsylvania, Virginia, man is accused of shooting his 65-year-old neighbor over a property line dispute.

Deputies from the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office were called to the 7200 block of Young Lane about a shooting.

When they arrived, officers found the homeowner lying in the driveway of his home with a single gunshot wound to the chest.

The 65-year-old man died a short time later, officials said.

Detectives learned that the shooting was connected to an ongoing feud over the property boundary.

The sheriff’s office said the victim had a landscaping crew at the house doing lawn maintenance when the shooting happened.

The shooter, 80-year-old Larry Johnston, was arrested and charged with first degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

The county’s sheriff recommends people contact law enforcement if they ever encounter someone who is verbally or physically aggressive.

Johnston and the victim lived in the only two homes on the street.
