Defense Contractor Says He'll Challenge Embattled Treasurer

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A Norfolk business owner says he plans to challenge the city’s embattled treasurer.

The Virginian-Pilot reports (http://bit.ly/2cO2dJE ) that Treasurer Anthony Burfoot is already facing a recall effort and a trial on federal corruption charges. Matt Hales is the latest threat, saying he’ll run in next year’s Democratic Primary.

Hales is co-owner of a defense contractor and a member of the city’s planning commission. The 46-year-old also has an undergraduate finance degree and a master’s in business administration from the University of Maryland.

Hales says he will not attack Burfoot, whom he says is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Under state law, Burfoot must leave office if he’s found guilty of a felony.
