WASHINGTON — When compared to states, D.C. had the highest per capita income in the nation last year, and the District’s personal income growth rate outpaced the national average.
Numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis show the District’s 2016 per capital income was $75,596, compared to the national average of $49,571.
Per capita income is the total personal income of all residents divided by the population.
D.C.’s total personal income in 2016 had an annual growth rate of 4.5 percent, compared to the 3.6 percent national average.
Maryland’s 2016 per capita income was $57,936 with a personal income growth rate of 3.7 percent last year. Virginia’s per capita income in 2016 was $53,723, with a personal income growth rate of 3.6 percent.
The lowest per capita income by state in 2016 was Mississippi, at $35,936.
