Day Care Worker Charged With Pulling Out Toddler's Hair

WASHINGTON (AP) — Authorities say a former Washington day care center worker was caught on video pulling a chunk of hair from a toddler’s head.

Court documents show 50-year-old Lisa Vaughn was charged with second-degree cruelty to children and released Thursday pending a preliminary hearing. Police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck says the parents of the 1-year-old boy discovered the missing hair Wednesday morning. He says they went to Kids Are Us Learning Center in southeast Washington and police were called when an altercation broke out.

An affidavit states surveillance video shows Vaughn “pulling the (child’s) braid out of his head and tossing it on the floor.” It says Vaughn acknowledged during questioning that she tore the hair from the boy’s scalp.

The D.C. Public Defender Service, which represents Vaughn, did not comment.
