Crew Search for Virginia Man, 23, Who Possibly Drowned

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) — Authorities say rescue operations for a missing swimmer in Virginia have turned to recovery efforts.

Local news outlets report that James City police and fire personnel were called around 7:15 p.m. Monday to search for 23-year-old Tony Jimenez Garcia in the College Creek area south of Williamsburg. Witnesses reported that he and a relative had been fishing before they went to cool off in the water.

Witnesses told authorities that Garcia went underwater and didn’t resurface after the two attempted swimming out to a sandbar.

Around 10:15 p.m. search and rescue operations, with assistance from the National Park Service and U.S. military, turned to recovery efforts.

Authorities remained on-scene late Monday using sonar scanning. If those efforts aren’t successful, operations will be suspended and resumed in the morning.
