ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) — Officials from Fort Belvoir and throughout Northern Virginia are celebrating completion of work to widen a key stretch of highway.
Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova and Acting Garrison Commander Lt. Col. Chris Tomlinson at Fort Belvoir are among the officials expected Wednesday morning for ceremonies on U.S. Route 1, also known as Richmond Highway.
The highway has been widened from four to six lanes on a nearly four-mile stretch of the highway south of the Capital Beltway which provides primary access to commuters working at Belvoir.
Recent expansions at Belvoir created a need for higher capacity on the road.
The project also features improved access from Interstate 95, new turn lanes and a median that will be able to accommodate bus rapid transit in the future.
