Coast Guard Searching for Missing Waterman Off Tangier Island

TANGIER, Va. (AP) — Authorities are searching for a waterman who is missing after his crabbing boat began taking on water on the Chesapeake Bay.

The U.S. Coast Guard said in a statement that the 40-foot vessel with two people aboard began taking on water off Tangier Island on Monday afternoon. Officials say another boat came to their aid and pulled one man from the water. He was taken to Tangier Island in stable condition.

The Daily Times reports (http://delmarvane.ws/2q21VZO ) that Coast Guard Petty Officer Barry Bena says the rescued man is believed to be the missing waterman’s son.

WBOC-TV reports (http://bit.ly/2pfk2Lk ) that Tangier Island Mayor James Eskridge says every waterman on Tangier joined the search for the father and son.

The search continued Monday evening, but weather conditions remained hazardous.
