Boy Critially Injured by Falling Lumber in Md. Backyard

WASHINGTON — A boy was critically injured Tuesday morning when a piece of wood fell off a shed roof and struck him on the head at a home in Landover Hills, Maryland.

The 12-year-old boy was convulsing and fell unconscious when paramedics arrived but he is expected to survive his head injury, said Prince George’s County Fire Department spokesman Mark Brady.

The boy was taken to a trauma center for children, Brady said.

Fire officials believe it was the boy’s mother who called 911 to report the injury in the 3900 block of 74th Avenue about 10:45 a.m. He was initially alert, Brady said.

The home was undergoing renovations and workers were on site when emergency crews arrived. Fire department staff were told the piece of wood fell off a shed in the backyard, Brady said.

It was not clear why the boy was not at school. Prince George’s County students returned to class last week.

Jamie Forzato contributed to this report from Landover Hills.
