Baltimore Co. Schools Consider Closing on 2 Muslim Holidays

TOWSON, Md. (AP) — The Baltimore County school board is expected to vote on a plan to close schools for two Muslim holidays when they fall on school days.

Media outlets report that the vote is expected next month, and comes after more than a decade of advocacy by the Muslim community. If the policy passes, the school system would be the first in Maryland to close on the two Islamic holidays, Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr, when they fall on school days.

Dr. Bash Pharoan, a Muslim physician whose children attended county schools, has advocated for 12 years to have the school system approve the holidays and close on those days. The board firmly denied his request two years ago.

There are no estimates of the number of Muslim children in the Baltimore County school system because the county doesn’t collect data on students’ religion.
