Baby Squirrels Saved After Falling From Sky During Storm

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — An animal group is working to save dozens of baby squirrels that were found hairless and with their eyes closed during Tropical Storm Hermine.

The Virginian-Pilot ( ) reports that the Virginia Beach Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Wildlife Program took in 78 squirrels between Sept. 1 and Sept. 4 that had fallen or been blown out of their nests.

The storm, in which gusts at Norfolk International Airport peaked at 55 mph on Sept. 3, occurred at one of two times during the year that squirrels are born.

Most of the babies were found in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake. Not all those that were rescued survived.

The babies are expected to be released in several weeks after they learn to be outside and forage for food.
