All DC Patrol Officers to Wear Body Cams by End of Year

WASHINGTON – The Metropolitan Police Department has nearly completed the rollout of body cameras to all of its 2,600 patrol officers.

Interim D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said the rollout should be finished by mid-December.

The city has spent more than $5 million to make it happen.

“The way that our officers have embraced the program and really wanted the program, even the membership of (and) the leadership of the D.C. police union, it’s been very helpful to us in getting this thing done as quickly as we have,” Newsham said Tuesday.

At this time last year, only about 400 District officers wore the body cameras.

In the future, other members of the police department, such as plainclothes officers, might also get the equipment.

“That’s definitely something we’re going to talk about and consider as we move forward,” said Newsham.
