2 Landfill Employees Die in Suffolk Drain Pipe

SUFFOLK, Va. (AP) — Investigators say two landfill employees have died after getting trapped in a vertical drain pipe in Suffolk.

Multiple news outlets report police say the incident happened Tuesday morning. Suffolk Fire & Rescue Deputy Chief Ted Adams says 35-year-old Eric O’Brien Williams of Portsmouth and 60-year-old Stephen Louis Wilk of Moyock, North Carolina, somehow got stuck in a pipe that was 20 feet deep and three feet wide at John C. Holland Enterprises, Inc.

City spokeswoman Diana Klink said crews were initially unable to reach the two men because of their location. They used rope and harness equipment to try to rescue them.

It’s still unclear how long the men were trapped.

Klink says officials are working to figure out what led up to the incident.
