2 Fatal Crashes Investigated in Virginia's Brunswick County

LAWRENCEVILLE, Va. (AP) — Virginia State Police say two people were killed in separate car crashes in Brunswick County.

The agency said in a news release that the first crash occurred Saturday on Interstate 85 near Rawlings. Troopers say 18-year-old Destiny Freeman of Lorton was driving south when her car ran off the interstate, struck a tree and overturned.

Police say a passenger, 18-year-old Amari Newton of Alexandria, died at the scene.

Troopers say the second crash occurred Sunday on Route 58, just east of Route 720. Police say 20-year-old Mekiel Banks of Chicago was driving east his car ran off the highway, struck a culvert, struck two trees and came to rest in the median.

Authorities say a passenger, 26-year-old Howard Griffin Jr. of Nashville, Tennessee, was pronounced dead at the scene.
