ALDIE, Va. — Northern Virginia officials broke ground Tuesday on a new park-and-ride lot in Loudoun County that will be partially paid for with Interstate 66 toll revenue.
The 300-space commuter lot in Aldie will provide express bus service to McPherson Square Metro Station in Downtown D.C. Bus service is set to begin on the same day that the I-66 tolls kick in — expected next July — for rush hour commuters traveling alone east of the Capital Beltway.
Toll revenues will provide more than $1 million for the $6.1 million parking lot project.
Kate Mattice with the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission said the state is providing advanced payment until the tolls begin, and then the state will be reimbursed from the toll revenue.
“This is really about providing transportation alternatives,” Mattice said.
Mattice said the Aldie park-and-ride is the first project for the “Transform 66 Multimodal” program. She said 10 projects were selected by the commission and will be in place on the day that tolling begins on I-66.
Loudoun County Supervisor Matt Letourneau who represents the Dulles area spoke at the groundbreaking event.
“We’re thankful to NVCT for providing over $1 million help us complete this project,” Letourneau said.
