“The Fighter” in Town for Belfast-Beltway Boxing

"Irish" Mickey Ward, whose boxing career was made famous in last year's Oscar winning film "the Fighter," will be hanging out in Northwest D.C. Saturday evening.

Ward is in town for a charity boxing event that pairs off DMV pugilists with opponents from Ireland.

The event is called the Belfast-Beltway Boxing Classic.  The series of ten amateur bouts raises money for boxing associations that work with at-risk youth on both sides of the Atlantic.  The charity organization that hosts the events contributes money both to training programs and equipment.

The Belfast-Beltway Classic has taken place annually since 2008. This year, the fighters will be facing off at the Westin Hotel in northwest Washington.

Cocktails will be served at 7 p.m., and then the fists will start flying at 8:30 p.m.
