Local Sandwich Earns Top Honors

It has been man's age old quest to cram more doughnuts into his diet.

Consider ChurchKey's Luther Sandwich another advance in human achievement.

The epicurean blog EndlessSimmer just released its list of the best sandwiches in America.  Taking top honors is a bacon and glaze confection served at ChurchKey, a gastropub near Logan Circle.

The Luther comes from the minds of ChurchKey executive chef Kyle Bailey and pastry chef Tiffany Maclsaac.  The two (who are husband and wife) set out to create a doughnut sandwich to trump all others.

The traditional Luther Vandross sandwich is a cheeseburger on a Krispy Kreme doughnut.  The ChurchKey version adhere's loosely to the formula, with some tasty upgrades.  Inside, its fried chicken and applewood smoked bacon.  Outside, the doughut is glazed with maple chicken jus, and piled with pecans.

The sandwich has been available since September, and is offered only on Sundays.  There is an air of mystery when you order, because you won't find the Luther on the menu.  To get one of these gorgeous, blood-slowing sandwiches, you'll have to ask for it from the server by name.
