The National Zoo's build-a-pride project got a boost Dec. 29, when the zoo's three adult lions and seven cubs got together for the first time.

Shera's four cubs were born in August, and sis Naba's three were born in September. All seven cubs share one dad, Luke. There will be a test on this information later.

When the army cubs first arrived in the yard, Luke turned and headed up to the highest tier in the yard. Maybe he was a bit scared of responsibility.

Says the zoo: "Fahari [a cub] has already figured out how to go up and down the stairs in the yard and visits the top level daily now. Luke didn’t seem to mind and, although he mostly ignored her, he couldn’t seem to resist a little play as he chased her several yards across the tier."

The best time to view the lion cubs is 12:30 p.m. each day, but staff decides on a daily basis whether the cubs will go out, so there are no guarantees.
