- Mac is back and we couldn't be more excited. That's right -- "MacGyver" is going to be made into a feature film. The cult classic that taught millions how to make a bomb out of Q-Tip and a dollop of sour cream is now in development. The series that ran from 1985 to '92 became shorthand for ingenious, quick-thinking solutions to seemingly impossible problems. Not to mention that the theme song alone has us basking in nostalgia.
- The Irish language is considered endangered -- with only 30,000 fluent speakers left today compared to 250,000 in 1922. Though experts predict Irish will likely survive this century, half of the world's 7,000 languages are expected to vanish by 2100. Sadly, one of the languages likely to become extinct is Tofa -- a Siberian language that has one word for "a two-year-old male, un-castrated, ridable reindeer." For shame.
- Billy Mays may get muzzled if one California politician has her way. The top-of-his lungs promoter of all things infomercial may have to put a lid on it or at least take it down a notch if a bill passes that mandates commercials cannot be louder than the programs they interrupt. Many marketers hope to reconcile the volume problem themselves without government intervention.
- Eyewitnesses are notoriously unreliable. Scientists have acknowledged that the identification process is a shaky one and can lead to egregious miscarriages of justice. Of the more than 230 people in the U.S. whose wrongful convictions were overturned by DNA evidence about 77 percent were involved in cases of mistaken identity, a study this month found.
