WASHINGTON -- The city is preparing to host 2.5 million to 3 million people for President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration, D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty said.
The city may close down the Southeast/Southwest Freeway to accommodate bus parking, he said.
That would require closing the Roosevelt and 14th Street bridges to regular traffic. The bridges would only be open to buses and emergency vehicles.
City officials are working with federal authorities to decide on street closures, Fenty said. The city may close additional streets to make room for bus parking and some pedestrian-only areas.
No one knows exactly how many people will attend the inauguration, but Fenty said officials are preparing for the largest possible number of people.
