Cheap Beer, Open Mic … Bad Idea?

Poetry reading & open mic at Busboys

Calling all Beatniks!

Busboys and Poets (2021 14th St. NW) -- restaurant, bookstore and U-Street yuppie gathering place -- is holding its monthly Nine on the Ninth this Tuesday at 9 p.m. (tickets $4). The featured poet is Jenny C. Lares, who offers "reflections on race, womanhood, Filipinoness, privilege, love, body politics, and on occasion, gallbladders." Following a reading from Lares, the microphone is up for grabs.

Nine on the Ninth wristbands will be sold all day in the bookstore beginning at 10 a.m. until sold out. Limit of four wristbands per person. Cash only.

If you're there early:

  • 4-7 p.m.: Happy hour has $4 draft beers (except for Delirium ... not fair!) and $5 featured wine specials.
  • 6 p.m.: Author David Vine will sign and discuss his new book "Island of Shame: The Secret History of the U.S. Military Base on Diego Garcia." Free, Langston Room.
  • Reaquaint yourself with the vegetarian-friendly menu options. We know, we know -- it became all too easy to bypass Busboys once their rep grew too big for their space, but cram yourself in for Hawaiian pizza or falafel once again. It's easier to ponder life and poetry on a full tummy.
