Bike Prom Means Never Having to Say You're Driving

Washington Area Bicyclist Association hosts big party for bikers

If you were one of those geeks, misfits, techies, loners, *insert clique here*, who missed your high school prom, here's your chance to relive your youth and party like it's 1999. (Jocks and cheeleaders are welcome too.)

But leave the pink taffeta and blue ruffles at home -- this prom requires post-apocalyptic style. Think Mel Gibson in Mad Max. We're talking about the Bike Prom 2010 -- Washington Area Biclyclist Association's annual event that invites you to dress up, dance, drink and even be crowned King and Queen.

This year's theme is Beyond Velodrome, a take on Beyond Thunderdome, hence the Mad Max reference. For those not in the know, a velodrome is an arena for track cycling. It's very fancy.

WABA's website decribes the prom theme this way: "A couple of years in the future, the streets of DC are ruled by velo gangs who have turned the asphalt into a battleground as they loot lycra and cripple cranksets."

Sounds a little scary, but the group promises a fun time -- DJs, raffles, crowns for best-dressed ... and what's a prom without prom pictures? Photographers will be on hand to capture your big moment. You don't have to be a WABA member to attend.

Bike Prom is Saturday, June 26, starting at 9 p.m., so bike on over to the Black Cat (1811 14th St. N.W.). Tickets are $10. Dressing up is strongly encouraged, and WABA is arranging for bike racks outside the club.
