Love the cherry blossoms, but hate the crowds at the Tidal Basin?
Although the crowds will inevitably descend on us this (and every) spring, a slightly more northern spot offers similar views without all the people.
Dumbarton Oaks might be the best-kept secret for cherry blossom viewing. Situated at 31st and R streets NW in Georgetown, the 10 acres of gardens and pathways are lined with cherry trees.
Dumbarton Oaks was founded in 1920 by Mildred and Robert Bliss, who found their ideal country house and garden in the District. At one point, the property had 53 acres with a 19th-century mansion at the highest point in Georgetown.
The grounds had been neglected, but the Blisses worked on the gardens for the next 30 years, planning every detail. Now Dumbarton Oaks offers beautiful views at all times of the year.
During the spring, the gardens are open daily, except Mondays, from 2-6 p.m. General admission costs $8; students, kids ages 2-12 and seniors get in for $5. Season passes are available.
And don't forget to send your best cherry blossom pictures to isee@nbcwashington.com when the time comes!
