HISTORIC HOLIDAY: Tour Mount Vernon by Candlelight, and enjoy quaintness to the max with fireside caroling, hot cider and ginger cookies. Tours include dancing, period music, and characters from the Washingtons time bringing visitors through the first and second floors. Through 9:30 p.m.; $20.

CALL TO ACTION: Celebrate Human Rights Day at Busboys and Poets (14th & V streets N.W.) with Amnesty International hosting a write-a-thon. Head to the Langston Room for food, drinks and live music, plus a letter-writing campaign and guests Sadia Hameed, campaign manager of Raise Hope for Congo, and Irene Safi Turner, speaking about violence against women in the Democratic Republic of Congo. 6:30 p.m.; donations suggested.

OPEN HOUSE: MidCity Holly Days are happening both Saturday and Sunday, when MidCity shops, galleries and restos offer events, specials and giveaways with local artists, musicians and DJs. Fun's happening both day and night, so check the complete schedule.
