Maryland’s Birthday Bash: Free Events in Annapolis


And you thought you were getting old.

The state of Maryland is turning 378 next Sunday, and you have the chance to join in on a celebration for a state that doesn't look a day over 350.

Four Rivers Heritage Area
, stretching from Sandy Point State Park to Rose Haven, is hosting its fifth annual Maryland Day Celebration from Friday, March 23 to Sunday, March 25.

You can find a host of special events, tours and programs in Annapolis, all for $1 or less! Here are some highlights to look forward to:

  • Historic Annapolis Museum (99 Main St., Annapolis, Md.) -- Visit the Annapolis Tapestries: 18th Century exhibit to learn about Heritage Tapestry from expert stitchers. You'll also have the chance to add your own stitches to an original work of art. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, March 24; free.
  • Maryland State House (100 State Circle, Annapolis, Md.) -- Take a behind-the-scenes tour of the new Maryland silver display, representing all of the state's counties along with Baltimore City. View the state's art collection and speak with curators.  1 p.m.-3 p.m on Friday, March 23; free.
  • Wimsey Cove Framing and Art (3141 Solomons Island, Road., Edgewater, Md.) -- Take a look at some of Wimsey Cove's oldest maps and hear speakers discuss how maps were made and used in 19th century Maryland. Free reproductions of a compass rose or a cartouche are available for each visitor. 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday, March 24; free.
  • Reynolds Tavern (7 Church Circle, Annapolis, Md.) -- Take part in a Maryland wine tasting and meet local artist J.E. Nicklason to check out his work featuring the Chesapeake Bay. 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m on Friday, March 23.; free. Staying for dinner? Enjoy a special "Maryland Day" menu (regular prices apply).
  • Hogshead (43 Pinkney St., Annapolis, Md.) -- Hear tales of what it was like to be a part of the 18th-century working class in Annapolis. Guests "from the past" will discuss their lives, work, and travels to the west. Noon-4 p.m. on Saturday, March 24; free.
