Nearby Slopes Open for the Season

Winter is on its way -- or judging from the pre-Thanksgiving snow that fell on the D.C. area, it's already here. Embrace the new season in nearby Pennsylvania, where three almost-local ski and snowboard resorts reopened for the season on Black Friday.

Liberty Mountain (78 Country Club Trail Carroll Valley, Pennsylvania) -- Liberty Mountain opened its six trails to the public on the three-day weekend after Thanksgiving. The slopes are closed again Monday through Thursday, Dec.1-4, but will reopen Friday, Dec. 5. Lift tickets are available online. About 80 miles from downtown D.C.

Whitetail Resort (13805 Blairs Valley Road, Mercersburg, Pennsylvania) -- Trails opened Black Friday with the breaking of the resort's "First Chair" ceremony banner. The resort is closed again during the week of Dec. 1-5, but will reopen Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 6-7. Lift tickets are available online. About 92 miles from downtown D.C.

Roundtop Mountain (925 Roundtop Road, Lewisberry, Pennsylvania) -- Slopes opened Black Friday, and unlike Liberty and Whitetail, Roundtop's slopes are open Monday, Dec. 1, although snowtubing is closed Monday. The slopes will be closed Tuesday throught Friday and will reopen the weekend of Dec. 6-7. Lift tickets are available online. About 117 miles from downtown D.C.
