Rusty -- the red panda who famously escaped from the National Zoo in 2013 -- has become a dad! Three more litters of red panda cubs have also been born in recent weeks.

Keepers had been monitoring Shama closely over the past few weeks since her behavior indicated a possible pregnancy. They're keeping watch over the cubs --who were born June 26 -- via a closed-circuit camera.

Red panda Regan gave birth to two cubs June 16. One cub was stillborn; the other is being hand-reared to increase its chances of survival. The zoo said June 26 that the surviving cub is in critical condition and receiving round-the-clock care.

Shama and Rusty's three cubs were born at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Virginia. Shama and Rusty were transferred there from the National Zoo in January after keepers were concerned that foot traffic to see giant panda Bao Bao would overwhelm the prospective parents.
