The only way to watch a movie at a memorial in August? The Films at the Stone series, which will take up residence at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial.
A free screening of “Cry Freedom," starring Denzel Washington, will be shown at the memorial (1964 Independence Ave. SW) Aug. 8 at 8:30 p.m.
Movie-goers are encouraged to fill up the green space adjacent to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Bookstore to get the best possible view.
“Cry Freedom” (1987) is an Oscar-nominated film starring Kevin Kline as South African journalist Donald Woods, who is forced to flee the country in order to publish a book about the death of his friend and activist Steve Biko (Washington).
Films at the Stone has already screened two movies: “A Time to Kill” in June and “Hotel Rwanda” in July.
“The films... will display the best of human strength, love and courage,” said the Memorial Foundation President and CEO Harry E. Johnson on the film series’ website.
