City Tap House Celebrates D.C. Beer Week

Central to Chinatown and Penn Quarter, City Tap House fills the rapid real estate turnover at 901 9th St. NW admirably with its mouth-watering gastropub fare and craft beers.

Meaty hand cut fries with truffle aioli ($7) certainly trumped some more famous truffle fries around the city, especially when ordered off the "Late Night" menu served between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. Having arrived to the table instantly off the fryer, the fries blistered my taste buds with flavor.

Don’t miss the chance to sample the brilliant Korean short rib tacos ($13) with pickled cabbage slaw, cilantro, chili sauce. Punchy with a mix of salty flavors, the tacos alone filled me up more than adequately.

Another top option is the mouth-wateringly scrumptious sweet corn and crab hushpuppies ($14) with honey-thyme butter and citrus remoulade. Perfectly basted and cooked, this wonderful dish comes alive with the fried batter, and the citrus remoulade adds a texture of brightness.

Either way, be sure to visit City Tap House to sample their craft beer-focused menu, which will be on display with the return of D.C. Beer Week (now through Aug. 24).

Four brewing events are listed below:

Tuesday, Aug. 19 at 6 p.m.: Oregon’s Deschutes Brewery Dinner. Priced at $75 per person (tax and gratuity not included), the menu will consist of five courses prepared by City Tap House’s Culinary Director Brian Cooke, each paired with highly rated brews. Standouts include Mirror Pond Pale Ale, Armory XPA, Fresh Squeezed IPA, Mirror Mirror, and Not the Stoic.

Tuesday, Aug. 19, 10 p.m. to close: Official Washington Cit Paper and Samuel Adams' 30 Beers for 30 Years D.C. Beer Week After Party. City Tap House's Beverage Director David Donaldson will create specialty cocktails made with Sam Adams beer. Cocktails will be priced at $8. Live music will be played throughout the evening.

Thursday, Aug. 21, 5 p.m. to close: "Where the Wild Beers Are." City Tap House will load their beer lines with a plethora of sour and wild ale beers from around the world, such as Gueuzerie Tilquin, Leipziger Gose, Uinta Brewing Company, and Perennial Artisan Ales. Prices range from $6 to $13 per draft, and from $6 to $110 for specialty bottled sours and wilds.Guests can also opt for a Sour Thursday Tasting Package and receive 10 five-ounce tastes of the beers poured throughout the evening, along with a commemorative City Tap House place for them to take home. This special tasting is priced at $50 per person.

Saturday, Aug. 23, noon to 5 p.m.: A Colorado vs. Delmarva Cornhole Tournament. For $15 per person, guests can enjoy both chilidogs with Colorado Green Chili and half smokes with sides of macaroni salad, potato salad, and baked beans. A variety of beers will also be on hand, priced at $5 each for those participating in the cookout. Highlights include the Breckenridge Brewery, Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, 3 Stars Brewing Company, Evolution Craft Brewing Company, Left Hand Brewing and New Belgium Brewing.
