Plans for RFK Stadium Site Include Possible New Football Stadium

RFK Stadium will be empty when DC United moves out next year, but the city has big plans for the area, including room for a possible new football stadium.

Events DC, the city's sports authority, plans an almost half-billion-dollar makeover of the underutilized land with neighborhood shopping and community recreation space that could start showing up within a year.

“Multipurpose fields, a sports and recreation complex, a market hall and even some pedestrian bridges to improve the connectivity,” Events DC President Greg O’Dell.

A new memorial would honor Robert F. Kennedy on the site.

“An RFK memorial that is befitting of his legacy,” O’Dell said.

The proposal includes a possible football stadium if the city and the Washington Redskins work out a suitable deal.

“Certainly we do want to preserve the option,” City Administrator Rashad Young said.

Mayor Muriel Bowser wrote to President Donald Trump asking him to turn over the 190 acres from federal control to the District, News4 reported last week. D.C. currently has a long-term lease on the land.

The city has been meeting with community groups and working for about two years to develop its plan. Many more meetings will be held before work actually begins.
