Naz Reid #0 of the LSU Tigers boxes out against Jalen Smith #25 of the Maryland Terrapins during the second half of the game in the second round of the 2019 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at Vystar Memorial Arena on March 23, 2019 in Jacksonville, Florida.

If you, like Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, put the Terps in your Final Four for March Madness, today's match definitely comes as a disappointment.

Third-seeded LSU beat sixth-seed UMD 69-67 to advance into the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament Saturday afternoon.

The closely fought game saw the Terps lunge for a last second comeback with Jalen Smith jumping for a three-point shot during the last 30 seconds of the game, tying the teams 67-67.

But LSU's Tremont Waters broke the tie in the last five seconds of the game, trouncing the Terrapins' chance at a Sweet 16 game in Washington, D.C. and ending Maryland's season.

LSU stormed into the game with Dorius Days, breaking an initial 4-4 tie and forcing Maryland to play catch-up in the first half, with LSU up 38-29.

The Terps caught up in the last quarter of the game, with Smith tying the game 55-55 with four minutes remaining. Two more free throws from Smith gave UMD their first lead.

Terps head coach Mark Turgeon said he was disappointed in the result but proud of his team.

"I love 'em. I love coaching 'em. They made coaching fun again. I was proud of them," Turgeon said after the loss. "And they represented our school all year the right way. And they are all great kids. I don't know why it didn't go our way today, but they deserve better and they can hold their heads high."

Saturday's loss is UMD's third first-weekend loss in the NCAA tourney. The Terps last made the Sweet 16 in 2016.
