Free Cab Rides on July 4 to Discourage Drunk Driving

Celebrating the Fourth of July with alcoholic beverages? Free cab rides will be available on July 4 throughout the D.C. area to discourage drunk driving.

The Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP) will make the rides available to residents 21 and older July 4 from 10 p.m. until 4 a.m. on July 5 as part of its SoberRide program. During that time frame, residents can call 1-800-200-TAXI (8294) to get a free ride worth up to $30 from one of nine participating cab companies.

The service will be available throughout D.C. and in Montgomery and Prince George's counties in Maryland, and in Arlington, Fairfax, eastern Loudoun and Prince William counties in Virginia.

In 2014, 164 of the 397 people killed in traffic crashes on July 4 involved a drunk driver, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Last year, 237 people used WRAP's SoberRide program over the holiday.

WRAP was founded in 1982 to fight underage drinking and driving under the influence in the D.C. area. SoberRide has provided 65,116 free cab rides since 1993.
