Capital Pride

Capital Pride kicks off this weekend, with the Capital Pride Honors Reception at 7:30 p.m. and Pride Celebration Kickoff Party at 8:30 p.m. on Friday in the Kogod Courtyard and Luce Foundation Center at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Both events are 21+. Tickets for both the reception and kickoff party are on sale now, with prices starting at $60. Capturing Fire International Queer Spoken Word Slam
May 31-June 1
Busboys and Poets, Takoma Location

This spoken-word focused event features panels, workshops and slam poetry performances that promote trans and queer poets from the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. A pass for everything is $50, but there are two free events on Friday, May 31, including a 200th Birthday Performance for Walt Whitman. Tickets for Saturday’s competition are $25 for both events, $10 for just the semi-final slam, and $20 for just the final slam.

Totally 90’s Film Festival
American History Museum Warner Brothers Theatre, Washington DC.

The 90s fun continues throughout the weekend and into the next two weeks. This weekend, on Saturday at 6:30 p.m., there will be a 90s party hosted by Riley from the Kane Show on HOT 99.5 FM and featuring “90s music… specialty cocktail drinks, giveaways, fun photo ops, and a screening of 10 Things I Hate About You and/or Clueless”. Other films on the list throughout the following two weeks include "The Fifth Element," "The Big Lebowski," "The Blair Witch Project," "Romeo + Juliet" and the Sandlot. Tickets range from $12-$45.

Ritmo Flamenco Presents: Dos Almas
May 31 - June 1
Atlas Performing Arts Center

Ritmo Flamenco is a Flamenco school and dance company based in Toronto. This Friday and Saturday, dancer and choreographer Anna Menendez, singer and percussionist Francisco Orozoco, dancer Pam de Ocampo and guitarist Ricardo Marlow will perform “Dos Almas," a story of two souls meeting. Ticket prices range from $35 to $45.

President Lincoln’s Cottage, 140 Rock Creek Church Rd NW

National Trust for Historic Preservation invites you to lounge, sip, listen and munch on the 16th president’s front lawn. Games, bands, square dancing and beard grooming are all on the agenda. Tickets for non-drinkers are $35. If you’re 21+ and planning to drink, tickets are $65 and include specialty cocktails and beer samples. Admission for children 6 and under is free, and VIP tickets are also available. All proceeds go toward preserving President Lincoln’s Cottage.

Celebrate the African diaspora through movement — either as a spectator or a participant. Dance Place is hosting a series of African dance classes and shows, both indoors and outdoors. Tickets range from $15 to $30.

Ballet Across America

Dance Theatre of Harlem and Miami City Ballet team up to spotlight women’s artistry in ballet. Curious, but don’t know much about ballet? Check out the Kennedy Center’s guide here. Tickets for each show range from $29 to $119.

To celebrate the first game inside the newly-opened Entertainment and Sports Arena, the Mystics are hosting a pregame block party that is free and open to the public. Following the party, the Mystics will play the Atlanta Dream in a rematch of the WNBA Semifinals at 7 p.m., with single game tickets starting at $12.

Vernon Davis Nando’s Takeover in College Park

This Saturday, Washington Redskins tight end Vernon Davis will be grilling at Nando’s in College Park and serving dishes to fans. All the proceeds for the event — which will also feature the Redskins Cheerleaders — will go to the Vernon Davis Foundation for the Arts, a charity promoting art education and appreciation with young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Dino-fy Yourself: Make your own prehistoric animal costume
Natural History Museum
10:30 a.m - 12 p.m.

The Smithsonian Natural History Museum invites participants to use art materials to create prehistoric animal costumes, wearable art and accessories based on the animals in the new Fossil Hall opening this summer. The museum recommends advanced registration to ensure a spot at the workshop, and one $5-per-family fee covers up to 5 family members.

For the second year, the Yards Park will host its Rosé All Day event, featuring live music, multiple rosé bars, wine glass monogramming and a rose garden lounge with flower crowns. Tickets range from $10-$50.

Boat Life Festival

The Yards Park and Marina will have boats, bands on the main stage, craft beer and food trucks this weekend, along with activities for all ages on land and in the water. Tickets range from $39 - $99.

Weidmann Bible Unfolding on the National Mall
8 a.m. to noon
Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, Washington D.C.

The Weidmann Bible depicts the entire Old and New Testament in pictures. This Saturday, The Museum of the Bible is seeking 1,000 volunteers to help unfold the entire, almost-a-mile-long book on the National Mall — the first time the entire Weidmann Bible will be completely unfolded in the United States. Participants will receive a voucher for free admission to the museum for one day, as well as an event t-shirt.

Line Dancing at the Wharf

District Wharf Transit Pier

This Saturday, the District Wharf is hosting a free themed dance night, featuring cocktails, line dancing and live music from the Will Gravatt Band. Instruction for the dance — provided by the DC Rawhides — starts at 7 p.m., while dancing begins at 8 p.m.

Profs & Pints: Bizarre Psychological Disorders

If you’re interested in learning more about the ways the human brain can believe it was abducted by aliens or transformed into a different species, go to the Bier Baron Tavern this Sunday to hear from Professor Brian A. Sharpless, visiting research fellow at Goldsmiths University of London. He will discuss five interesting psychological conditions, placing them in historical and cultural context. Tickets are $12 in advance, or $15 at the door.

This year marks the Downtown Columbia Partnership’s third annual Books in Bloom book festival. The festival features authors, readings, panel discussions, children’s activities, a Rosé Garden and a pop-up bookstore. Admission is free and open to the public.
