Two federal commissions approved plans for a pedestrian bridge linking the Kennedy Center to the Potomac River.
The Kennedy Center is in the midst of a $175 million expansion that's meant, in part, to improve pedestrian access to the waterfront building and bring it closer to the river.
The Kennedy Center and the project's architect said in a news release that the bridge was approved Thursday by the National Capital Planning Commission and the U.S. Commission on Fine Arts.
The expansion will be located south of the main Kennedy Center building and include rehearsal rooms and classrooms, a lecture hall, meeting rooms and an event space. It's scheduled to open in 2018. The bridge would go over Rock Creek Parkway and connect to a pedestrian walkway along the river.
