Capitol Christmas Tree Arrives in D.C.

Tree set to arrive on Capitol Hill Monday morning

Thanksgiving's over, which means it's totally OK to start putting up the decorations now.

Case in point: The U.S. Capitol's Christmas tree is scheduled to arrive on the grounds around 10 a.m. Monday. The 65-foot tree arrived Sunday at Andrews Air Force Base. It comes from the White River National Forest in Colorado.

Known as The People's Tree, the Capitol's tree comes from a different state each year. Last year's came from the Stanislaus National Forest in the central Sierra Nevada mountains in California.

Each year, the lighting ceremony is free and open to the public. This year's is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 5 p.m.

The tree will be decorated with approximately 5,000 ornaments and will be lit by House Speaker John Boehner.

But this isn't the only one in town: First Lady Michele Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia last week greeted the arrival of the Christmas tree that will be displayed in the Blue Room of the White House. The 19-foot tree arrived Friday by horse-drawn carriage.
